The Cathedral has been at the heart of the community for nearly 1000 years and all staff and volunteers live by their values which are Kindness Openness and Excellence in all that they do.

Established as a Charity, the accounts are quite complex for the size of the business. They earn income from various streams including visitors, property rentals, investment portfolio, café and shop and the world-famous Christmas Market as well as from donations, legacies and grants. With a mission that encompasses the ministry of the church and the stewardship of the heritage assets, a commercial outlook is required to be combined with good cost control.

The successful Financial Controller will: -

  • Be Chartered, Certified or Chartered Management Accountant, ACA/ACCA/ACMA or equivalent
  • Have previous Financial Controller experience
  • Have proven technical accounting and reporting ability with up-to-date knowledge of accounting practices
  • Ideally have charity accounting and reporting experience, although this is not essential
  • Have previous staff leadership and management experience
  • Have good IT knowledge with experience of Sage 200 or equivalent systems
  • Have experience of reviewing, challenging, and presenting monthly management reports within agreed time frames
  • Be able to hit the ground running with minimal management and the ability to use your initiative
  • Be sympathetic to the mission of the Cathedral and recognise the environment that you work within

Your main duties will fall under the following headings

  • Annual financial Statements
  • Budgets and forecasting
  • Management Reporting
  • Cost control
  • Financial Management
  • Treasury
  • Statutory and Tax Compliance
  • Staff Management
  • Other general tasks

Experience with designing and managing budgets and management accounts is essential. Having the ability to analyse, interpret and communicate financial information and being able to work flexibly as a team are also key requisites. Experience of VAT and gift aid management would be helpful,

You will be able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines, have the ability to solve problems and be able to motivate and engage with others.

This really is a unique role set within a beautiful environment in central Winchester.
